Frequently Asked Questions

What does the risk profile mean?

Blackists are public listings of vessels known to be engaged in Illegal, Unreported or Unregulated fishing. Blacklists are usually published by Regional Fisheries Management Organizations or individual countries.  Sourcing from these vessels may result in increased scrutiny by law enforcement or present avoidable reputation/brand risks.

Withhold Release Orders and Findings are issued by the United States government for  vessels where there are ongoing concerns of forced labor onboard. If discovered, US imports of seafood harvested using these vessels will be blocked, resulting in supply chain disruption and additional costs.

The Outlaw Ocean Project is an investigative reporting NGO that publishes details of vessels the organization has identified as having a risk of illegal fishing or forced labor. These vessels are not illegally operating unless they are sanctioned or blacklisted, but sourcing from them may present reputation/brand risks.
